Do Visa Officers Have to Deny a Certain Number of Visas in a Given Day?

Written by Travis and Mandy Feuerbacher, Former Visa Officers & Immigration Attorneys

There’s a common rumor among visa applicants that Visa Officers have quotas of denials they must meet each day. Some people believe that even strong applicants can be denied simply because the officer “needs to hit their number.”

But is this true? As former Visa Officers, let’s clear up the myth once and for all.

Do Visa Officers Have Quotas?

The short answer: No.

Visa Officers are not required to deny a certain number of visas in a day. There are no secret quotas or percentages they must reach. Each application is reviewed individually based on U.S. immigration law.

Instead of quotas, officers make decisions by evaluating:

  • The answers you give in your interview
  • The consistency of your DS-160 and supporting details
  • Whether your purpose of travel makes sense
  • Whether you demonstrate strong ties to your home country

Why This Myth Exists

Because many applicants see large numbers of denials each day, they assume it’s because of quotas. In reality, most denials – at least for nonimmigrant visas - are under Section 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This essentially means that the applicant failed to demonstrate that they were qualified for the visa they sought, possibly because they didn’t show sufficient ties to their home (a compelling reason that they will leave the United States after their trip concludes).

It’s not about the officer needing to “hit a target.” It’s about whether the applicant can meet the legal requirement of proving non-immigrant intent.

Do officers have a minimum or maximum number of visas they can approve each day?
➡️ No. Officers may approve many applicants in one day or deny many—it all depends on who qualifies under the law.

Why do so many people get denied if there are no quotas?
➡️ Denials usually happen because applicants fail to demonstrate strong ties to their home country, provide vague answers, or appear unprepared.

Can an officer deny me even if my documents are perfect?
➡️ Yes. Documents alone don’t guarantee approval, and officers are trained to rely on the applicant’s verbal responses – not documents. The interview itself is the key.

Final Thoughts

The truth is simple: Visa Officers do not have quotas. Each case is judged on its own merits. If you hear otherwise, you can be confident it’s just a myth.

Your best strategy is not to worry about imagined quotas. Instead, prepare to show your qualifications clearly, confidently, and consistently.
