Mistake on Your DS-160 Form? Here’s What to Do Before It Costs You
Written by Travis and Mandy Feuerbacher, Former Visa Officers & Immigration Attorneys
✂️ “Measure Twice, Cut Once”
— A common U.S. saying that applies perfectly to your DS-160 form.
Filling out the DS-160 isn’t just a paperwork chore — it’s your first impression. Visa officers often read your answers before you even say a word at the interview. Your form sets the tone and influences the questions you’ll be asked.
Why Accuracy on Your DS-160 Is Crucial
The officer is looking for two key traits during your interview:
- Credibility
- Honesty
If your answers on the form don’t match what you say during the interview — or if they conflict with internal records, the officer may view you as dishonest.
And dishonesty doesn’t just mean denial. In serious cases, you could be hit with a permanent ineligibility (Section 6C1) — meaning you’ll never qualify for a visa again.
Yes, it’s that serious.
Found a Mistake After Submitting the DS-160?
Here’s what you can - and can’t – do:
✅ If You Haven’t Submitted Yet:
You can simply correct the error and proceed.
❌ If You Already Submitted:
You can’t edit the form. Your only option is to start over and submit a new DS-160. But there’s a catch…
Why Submitting a New Form Can Be Complicated
When you create a DS-160, you’re issued an Application ID number — and that’s what you use to schedule your visa interview.
So if you:
- Submit a new form, and
- Show up with a different confirmation number…
💥 You won’t be allowed to interview.
You’ll have to:
- Reschedule the interview
- Possibly pay the application fee again
What to Do If You Find a Mistake on Your DS-160
If you discover an error on your DS-160 form, your next steps depend on when you catch the mistake:
🔹 If you haven’t submitted the form yet:
You're in luck — just go back and correct the mistake before finalizing the submission.
🔹 If you’ve submitted the form but haven’t scheduled your visa interview:
You can submit a new DS-160 form and use the new Application ID to schedule your appointment.
🔹 If you’ve already scheduled your visa interview:
This is where it gets tricky. Since the Application ID on your DS-160 is linked to your scheduled interview, changing it can cause issues.
Your best move: Visit the website where you scheduled your visa interview. Some locations allow you to update your Application ID number before you appear for your interview. If that doesn't work, reach out to the Embassy or Consulate to request permission to update your Application ID number from your new DS-160 form.
🔹 If the embassy does not allow updates to your DS-160 ID:
It’s safest to cancel your current appointment, submit a new DS-160 form, and schedule a new interview. Note that you will need to pay the visa fee again.
- Can I fix just one field after submitting?
No. Once submitted, your DS-160 is locked. You must create a new one. - Will I be denied if my DS-160 Confirmation Sheet and Interview Confirmation don’t match?
You will not likely even be allowed to interview. The Application ID Number from your DS-160 must match what’s in the system. - Can I avoid paying the visa fee twice?
Only if your Embassy allows you to update the ID without rescheduling. - What if my visa agent made the mistake?
You’re still accountable. The form is yours, and you’re the one who certified it as true when it was submitted.
