What Happens Right After Your Visa Interview?
Written by Travis Feuerbacher, Former Visa Officer & Immigration Attorney
Your U.S. visa interview can feel like a final hurdle in your journey, but what happens after the interview is just as crucial. The process doesn’t stop once you've walked out of the consulate or embassy – in fact, this is when things really get rolling. Let's break down the steps that follow your interview and how you can stay on top of things until you receive your visa.
The outcome of your visa interview can vary, but it usually falls into one of a few categories. Here’s what you can expect:
- Approval: This is the outcome everyone hopes for. If the visa officer tells you your visa is approved, congratulations! You’re on the home stretch, but it’s not over yet.
- Denial: Unfortunately, if your visa is denied, the officer will not give you a specific explanation. Don’t argue with the officer after their decision is made. Simply thank them for their time and depart the embassy or consulate.
- Additional Processing Needed: In some cases, the officer may not make an immediate decision. This could be due to the need for additional documentation or further administrative checks. You won’t leave the embassy with a final answer, but it’s a common part of the process, so be patient.
Assuming you're approved, the next step is getting your passport back with the visa inside. The timeline for this can vary widely depending on the embassy or consulate, but on average, it takes about 2 to 3 weeks. In some cases, this could be longer, especially if additional processing is required.
Note that you may need to select how you'd like your passport to be delivered – often through a courier service or postal service – and your choice in delivery could add additional time to the process.
π» How to Check the Status of Your Visa Application?
While you’re waiting for your passport, you can keep track of the status of your application online at the Consular Electronic Application Center’s website. Make sure you retain the Application ID Number generated by your DS-160 form, as you’ll need that to check on your status.
Once you check, you may see one of three updates:
- Approved: Your application has passed all checks and is now being processed.
- Issued: This means your visa is either printed or in the process of being printed and should be on its way to you soon.
- Refused: While this could signal that your application was denied, the system will also show “Refused” if your application has been paused for additional processing. If this is the case, you may need to act quickly to resolve any issues or provide additional context for your Visa Officer to review.
β οΈ What Happens if the Status Changes to “Refused”?
If you see that your application status has changed to “Refused,” it may be time to take action. Applications which have been placed on hold – what is commonly referred to as “Administrative Processing” – also show up as “Refused,” but you may still have a path to a successful outcome.
Sometimes, the officer may need more information from you, such as additional documents or details. If this happens, don’t panic! You might have the chance to provide the necessary materials for an approval.
However, if the refusal is due to more serious issues, such as criminal activity or visa fraud, the situation may be more complicated. It’s advisable to reach out to a licensed immigration attorney who can guide you through this process and help you determine the best steps forward.
When will I know the result of my visa interview?
- While most applicants may receive an immediate decision, some will have to wait a few days, weeks, or even months for the final decision. Your passport may be returned with a visa or retained while your application undergoes further processing or review.
What happens if my visa is denied?
- If your visa is denied, you will not receive specific a reason for the refusal. Don’t argue with the Visa Officer; simply leave the embassy or consulate and consider how you might not have explained your qualifications.
What is Administrative Processing?
- “Administrative Processing” refers to additional checks or reviews that may delay your visa approval. Administrative Processing can arise from a variety of factors, ranging from simple computer issues at the embassy or consulate, to more serious concerns of fraud. You may want to consult with an immigration attorney to explore your options if your application is placed into Administrative Processing.
Can I track the status of my visa?
- Yes, you can track your visa status using your Application ID through the Consular Electronic Application Center’s website. It will inform you whether your visa has been approved, issued, or refused. Remember that your status will show “Refused” even if your application is undergoing Administrative Processing.
How long does it take to get a visa after the interview?
The timeline for this can vary widely depending on the embassy or consulate, but on average, it takes about 2 to 3 weeks. If additional processing is needed, it may take longer.
